The walls of Essex Modern City received an update on Saturday, Jan. 6.

The Essex Paint Jam Volume 4 attracted some of the area’s top local muralists back to Essex Modern City on the near East Side not far from downtown San Antonio and just a little ways south of the Alamodome.

Some of San Antonio’s top muralists gathered at Essex Modern City on Saturday, Jan. 6, for Paint Jam 4.

While new work was going up, there were plenty of existing paintings to attract local art fans on the walls of the former manufacturing building near downtown.

There are so many incredibly talented artists in South Texas.

Some of their work is currently on display in the public 2023 Dia de los Muertos art for the Day of the Dead San Antonio celebration.

Dia De Los Muertos and Halloween season always mean large, brightly colored skulls in downtown San Antonio.

Several of those are located close together in La Villita, where there were lively crowds Saturday and Sunday for Day of the Dead San Antonio celebration.

Dec. 7 at the Continental Club in Houston
Dec. 8 at Paper Tiger in San Antonio
Dec. 9 at The Mohawk in Austin

Murals across the road on Hoefgen Street

Opposite the long mural on Hoefgen Street is another shorter mural that is in the sun during the early part of the day. Both sides of the street near downtown San Antonio have gotten new murals from time to time. This is from the end of 2019.
