Fort Lauderdale Beach is a place where Florida spring break legends are born.

While a few holdovers like the legendary Elbow Room remain, things have changed. Over the years the beachside skyline has evolved from little bars and mom-and-pop hotels to high rise hotels and luxury condo buildings.

You can’t make a trip to South Florida without hitting at least one of the beaches.

Two of the most popular places for salt and sand are Miami Beach at Lummus Park and Fort Lauderdale Beach between Las Olas Boulevard and Sunrise Boulevard.

Sunrise over the Atlantic on Fort Lauderdale Beach

Maybe sunrises and sunsets at the beach are no big deal if you live there.

I’ve never gotten tired of seeing the sun rising over the Atlantic Ocean or setting over the Pacific.

Sunrises especially seem to attract me. It’s like God’s way of giving us hope for a fresh start.

And since it was just a short walk from my hotel to the sands of Fort Lauderdale Beach, I had to dedicate a little time one morning to see and photograph the sun coming up.

A Texas night, a Ford pickup and Led Zeppelin

I was a Texas teenager driving my dad’s Ford F-100 pickup. It had an AM radio with one speaker that probably sounded awful compared to even the cheapest modern car stereo. And no AC.

I was driving along one night with my friend Steve Garza riding shotgun. It’s lost on me now where we were going to or coming from. Probably on some highway in or around San Antonio that’s a lot more congested now than it was then.

We had the windows rolled down and that cheap radio cranked up. Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” came on.

I know that scene is cliche as hell. I probably kind of knew it then. But for 8 minutes and 2 seconds, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page made us feel like we were cool and the world was right.

Notre Dame of Paris back in the day

I was fortunate enough to visit Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris about 20 years before the fire of April 15, 2019.

In the first photo you can see the famous spire that collapsed in the fire.

It was wonderful to watch on TV earlier this week as Notre Dame reopened to the public.

Remembering a stroll through Paris

I spent almost a week walking the streets of Paris in the spring of 2000.

The weather was mostly cloudy and sometimes rainy – not unusual for that time of year in Europe.

Although it is easy to get around via the Metro (subway), Paris is a great city to see on foot.
